"When I entered the mascot industry 15 years ago, I had no idea where to start. I had no connections, no frame of reference, and nowhere to turn for guidance. I was just a dance and theatre kid teaching myself how to be a mascot from YouTube videos, and making the rest up as I went along. In a hot, sweaty bear costume. In mid-July. For minimum wage.
Thankfully, I’ve been fortunate enough to land on my comically oversized feet. Since that fateful summer, I’ve gone on to receive world-class training and experience from industry professionals, earn national recognition and news coverage, and revitalize an NAIA program, securing more than $20,000 worth of funding for my program. But something was still missing.
I’ve noticed that while the mascot industry is chock-full of remarkable costume manufacturers, insanely talented performers, and even coaches, it lacks standardization. And for someone starting from scratch like I was, that’s a real issue. So much of the mascot industry is still the Wild West, leaving under-resourced performers like I was to fend for themselves. Far too many get stuck trying to reinvent the wheel instead of building upon legacies.
Today, I’m being the change I wish to see in my industry and launching a business I’ve spent months perfecting: Mascot Makeover.
